“In most startups, the company culture evolves haphazardly. That’s a real shame. The culture should be well defined from the beginning…. Culture is the underpinning for success.”
–John Scarborough, co-founder IP5280 (acquired by MegaPath)
Most of the time we know, but do not realise, the importance of a company culture. Especially in start-ups, when we are so caught up with the haphazard spiral of firefighting. One thing leads to the other and before we know it, the result of not establishing a suitable corporate culture has left its impact.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Today at Swedish App Scene, we will share a few tips on how and what a start-up can do to keep its company culture strong and empowering.
Share your vision, purpose and values
What is the purpose of the start-up? Is it built to last, or built to flip? How is the team going to approach problems faced? It is not just important for the founder to be clear on these aspects, but for the entire team to live and breathe these sentiments as well. When everyone is on the same page, “bake them into the startup’s company culture, processes, daily decisions, business plans and even performance reviews.”
Be flexible in approaches, yet consistent with goals
In our VUCA environment today, we face unexpected crisis ranging from having a new competitor to technology disruptions. We need to think on our feet, execute fast and to remain steadfast in times of uncertainty. Therefore, it is important to be flexible in the pursuit of our goals, and these goals, in contrast, require fierce dedication. Even in times of adversity, it is crucial to be committed to your goal and withstand whatever obstacles that might come your way.
Making sure the puzzle pieces fit
People will be your greatest asset, and it is important to make sure that there is synergy within the team. Partner people who are aligned, not just in talent but also in terms of character and emotional intelligence. Everyone matters, from your co-founders to employees to investors. You need good and committed partners who share your vision and goals as aforementioned. Hence, it is prudent to invest more time and effort in your hiring process, looking for fit within the company. The same goes for negotiating with investors and vendors – the fit matters more than the money.
The importance of a company culture
A strong culture is essential in startups, as in other enterprises. “Entrepreneurs neglect it at their peril.”
Too many entrepreneurs catalysed the hiring and partnering process without letting the dust settle. This led on to incongruency in their teamwork, delays, disruptions and expenses in dealing with fixing these issues.
