What is it: Karma – Rädda mat från restauranger och caféer is a sustainable app that lets you save unsold food from restaurants as takeaway at reasonable prices.
How it works: The app asks for signup when open, but you can also opt for testing as guest user. Once you’re in, you will be asked to accept location services, afterward the app will do a GPS search and display nearby restaurants that have unsold food offers and the number of stock. You can buy the food directly from the app and get a receipt in your “Purchase History”. Pick up your purchase at the restaurant before the specified time and show the receipt to get your delicious food. Enjoy!
The profile feature details all your purchases and the quantity of food that you “save” on the app. The full list of affiliated restaurants that work with Karma can be found in the Restaurants directory.
Best for: The eco conscious consumer and anyone who’s on a tight food budget
Value Offering: As a social enterprise, Karma provides a digital solution to the annual 90,000 tons of unnecessary food waste from restaurants business in Sweden. With each purchase on Karma, you are not only saving money but also saving the environment by fighting food waste and creating a more sustainable society. Karma is the meeting point between sellers and buyers in the efforts to save food that are too good to throw away!
Hype Level: Though relatively new (the app has only been launched since November 2016), Karma has garnered considerable attention from both media and investors while gathering a few entrepreneur awards along the way. Last year the company took up a 7 million SEK investment from Norrkens Foundation.
